week 36

Week 36 at the Elmore School was full of excitement!  It was a short week back after the long Memorial Day weekend.  We are now in the final stretch of the school year with just over two weeks to go!  It always amazes me how quickly the end of the school year gets here.  On Thursday we had our final ECO of the year at the North Branch Nature Center, and had a live video chat with Mrs. Bellavance's Granddaughters' class in Walden who have been learning about One Room School Houses.  We ended our week with 3rd graders visiting MES 4th grade and the rising first graders visiting us from MES and All Saints Academy.  It was fun to have a glimpse of the what next years class will look like, and it gives me so much hope for the future of The Elmore School!

During our literacy block this week students worked on phonics practice, reading, and writing as they completed memory letters, and persuasive writing.  During math, all of the children spent the week learning about fractions.  They have been enjoying this shift in curriculum as we approach the end of the school year.  We will end the next two weeks with Time and Money.

During Science this week our focus was on Patterns in the Night Sky.  On Tuesday students learned about the moon cycle and on Friday they learned about why we can't see stars during the day (but they are still there).

During ECO on Thursday we had a fun day visiting the North Branch Nature Center!  After arriving we had a nice walk out to a wooded area known as the "Culvert"; and area where run off from the mountain funnels into a culvert to and is then disbursed .  There was no water in the area that day, but there were lots of rocks to explore.  We spend the morning exploring the area, making rock paint by crushing rocks to make a mineral paint which students could paint on rocks with.  There were also many slugs and snails which became a popular pass time as students set up "snail races"!  We also had a small fire and students roasted marshmallows to make s'mores!  Thank you to Paige Bowen and Deidra Keith for being our parent volunteers this week and a huge Thank you to Carrie Riker and the NBNC for another wonderful year of ECO!

There is no one signed up for Family Hot Lunch next week, but I think we can put something together with little effort.  Im thinking Hot dogs, potato chips, carrot sticks, and watermelon.  I will ask parents to contribute collectively and we will put it all together.

Please email me your school lunch orders by 6:00 pm Sunday.  Hot Lunch available on Monday and Wednesday and sandwiches or salads available Monday - Thursday.
